“ If Jenna sends the ball back to you using the stick like a bat, is that a push or a pull?”.Students sort and classify the forces they observe as either pulls or pushes. “Are there as many ways to push the ball as there are to pull the ball?".“Does that pull/push seem as strong as this pull/push?”.“ How is the push of the straw different from the push of the craft stick?”.
Students compare and contrast the forces of pull and push they observe.
“The ping-pong ball moved really quickly across the table! How did you make it go so fast?”. “How can this material or object be used to push or pull the ball?”. “How many different ways can you push or pull the ping-pong ball across the table?”. Students observe examples of the forces of push and pull on the ping-pong ball. communicate understanding of pushes and pulls as forces that can move objects in many different ways. Educator supports (as necessary) with guiding questions about how to use a Venn diagram or T-chart. sort and classify the information gathered about the different ways that the ping-pong ball can be pushed and pulled using sorting mats or hoops, and record (in words, drawings or photos) the results of their sorting and classifying using a T-chart or a Venn diagram. (e.g., students should conclude that a ping-pong ball on a table can be made to change direction if a different type of force is applied - i.e., a push or a pull – and that the strength of the push or pull can make the ball go faster, change direction, or fall off the table). compare and contrast observations about what happens, what is the same, and what is different between different types of pulls and pushes, etc. 
Small groups of students seated across from each other at a desk or table are best. use the bag of suggested materials to explore and observe all the ways they can move the ping pong ball back and forth across a table.Students use the Sorting Mats learning strategy to develop and apply the skills of Observing, Comparing & Contrasting and Sorting & Classifying as they explore the forces of push and pull acting on everyday objects.
